Jean Kittrell Photo Elicitation Interview
Photo elicitation interview conducted on March 29, 2016 with Jean Kittrell, a jazz piano-vocalist, former Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) professor and chair of the Department of English, and long time resident of Edwardsville, Illinois. She is joined by sousaphonist, former band member and current leader of the Old St. Louis Levee Band, St. Louis Rivermen, and Powerhouse Five, David "Red" Lehr and his wife, Carolyn Lehr. The interview was conducted by Therese Dickman, Fine Arts Librarian at SIUE's Lovejoy Library, and anthropology undergraduate student Emily Warf. In the interview, Jean, Red, and Carolyn discuss the history of Jean's performing career, her life, and her bands, including the Jazz Incredibles, St. Louis Rivermen, and Old St. Louis Levee Band. Individuals in photos which hung in Jean's hallway are identified, and the significance of photographs is also discussed. The interview was conducted in two parts for recording purposes, and originally transcribed by Emily Warf. It was conducted in Jean's home in Edwardsville, Illinois.

St. Louis Jazz Club Christmas Party, 2004
In 2004, the St. Louis Rivermen performed at the St. Louis Jazz Club's Christmas Party held at the Moolah Shrine Center in St. Louis, Missouri. The event was held on December 12th. Jean Kittrell collected a large sticker from the St. Louis Jazz Club, which is featured on her music briefcase. Old Guys Jazz Band Performance on Delta Queen Steamboat, 1980s
Jean Kittrell performed with the Old Guys Jazz Band on board the Delta Queen, a paddle wheel steamboat. Photos from one of these performances note that they were taken at some point in the 1980s. The steamboat docked in St. Louis, Missouri, and also traveled to Hannibal, Missouri, on its way up and down the Mississippi River. Edinburgh International Jazz Festival, 1989
1989 Edinburgh International Jazz Festival held in Edinburgh, Scotland, where the Jazz Incredibles performed and were awarded Most Entertaining Group. The festival is held annually and is a week-long festival. John Becker, the banjoist for the Jazz Incredibles, impressed audiences in Scotland so much with his melodic single-string technique that he also became known locally as the "Banjo King."
