The Metro-East Journal reported news of cultural, social, and historical significance on Madison and St. Clair counties from 1889 until its closure in 1979. The paper ran under several names during that time: The East St. Louis Journal, East St. Louis Daily Journal, The Daily Journal, and St. Clair and Madison Counties Evening Journal. The newspaper's morgue was donated to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 1979. The collection contains approximately 400,000 clips, pamphlet files containing an estimated 1,328 documents, and a microfilm library of 639 reels. The clippings also contain 102,090 searchable topics dating as far back as the 1930s. All of Metro-East, Illinois is covered in the clippings as well as St. Louis and the State of Illinois. National and international news are included if they have a connection to the Metro-East region or if they were written by Metro-East Journal staff. Sports features and personalities pieces are also included.
