Description

Personal fan letter written by Libby M. Turnbull, a former educator who attended the September 1994 performance by the St. Louis Rivermen at the Hamiltonian Hotel in Hamilton, Ohio. The letter's author had expected a high quality of performance, but noted that what struck her most was the emotional value Kittrell and her group gave to the performance, and the impressiveness of David "Red" Lehr's talent on the sousaphone.

Text

Dear Jean Kittrell,
After the three-hour love/jazz feast Sunday night I'm taking the first-name initiative!
I don't know when in my 73 years I've enjoyed an evening more - and that sentiment is echoes by my husband, the other six at our table, and the entire audience, I'm certain.
I expected talent, I expected nostalgia, I expected the music to bounce off the walls, but I really was surprised and thrilled with the sheer enthusiasm and friendliness of your group. It was contagious!
Each one of your group was exceptional - but I have never before heard such an array of tones come out of a sousaphone!
My husband Bob joins me in thanking you for an absolutely delightful evening at The Hamiltonian - and we're looking forward to your return.
Most sincerely,
Libby M. Turnbull
P.S. I, too, am a former educator - high school level honors English/American Literature - but I still care about commas, good grammar and usage! LMT
