Description

The First Unitarian Church of Alton was established in 1836. It originally met in the office of Dr. William Emerson, the brother of Ralph Waldo Emerson, as the First Congressional Church of Alton. In 1854 the former Catholic Church, located at the corner of Third and Alby in Alton, was purchased by the church. It had been damaged by fire the previous year so rebuilding was necessary. The refurbished building was dedicated October 14, 1855. In 1890 the church changed its name to The First Unitarian Society. A new building at the same location was dedicated October 29, 1905. In 1938, the church again changed its name to The First Unitarian Church and it continued to be known as such today.

The collection contains writing and correspondence of former ministers. It also includes membership rosters, various church histories, records from building programs and church financial and business records. The collections consists of photographs, clippings and other documents. Blueprints from 1966 and the Abstract of Title for the church property are also contained in the collection.
